This week, 1350 men at Southland will wrap up the Conquer Series on sexual purity and I am so excited to see what the result will be as men walk into sexual freedom over the next months and years. The series has caused me to think deeply about sexual purity; more deeply than I have in recent memory. In my life God has been so faithful. I had the very normal years of battling sexual temptation when I was a teenager and young adult, but was delivered miraculously through inner healing just after I turned 21. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that since then few personal battles have been leveled at sexual purity in my life – although there have been other battles to fight.

As I have reflected on how amazing Christ has been in delivering me and keeping me from falling back into temptation, as well as how some of my friends have suffered as they battled sin in their lives, one thing has struck me time and time again; fighting sin takes tremendous energy. I remember as a young man, the all-encompassing fight between what I knew was right and what I just simply wanted to do; what the Bible calls the battle against the flesh or sinful nature. These past few weeks of learning have stirred up those old memories and I have become even more grateful for the freedom I found in Jesus.

Possibly one of the most profound realizations is that once an individual finds freedom in an area of significant bondage (sexual or otherwise) the energy that it took to resist temptation can be reinvested in the calling that Christ has on our lives. Think about that for a minute, I think this was a significant revelation.

Think about it in terms of smoking and money. I really don’t know how much cigarettes cost, but assuming they are around $12.50 for a pack of 25 cigarettes, if you smoked one pack a day your bill at the end of one year would be just over $4500. Now let’s say you started smoking at 14 and continued for 10 years before kicking the habit at 24. Assuming the price doesn’t go up (it will), and assuming you actually paid for cigarettes as a 14-year-old (which you probably didn’t; you probably either paid a premium of $1 or $2 per cigarette or stole them), you would have wracked up a whopping $45,000 invested in toxic lung waste. Wow!

But now imagine you began to struggle with sexual purity at the age of 14 and continued to struggle for 10 years until you were finally delivered at 24, just think about the investment of time and energy that went into that battle! It’s significant.

This is the (obvious) point; if we continue to annihilate sin in our lives, we will have more energy to invest in the lives of our children, in our marriages, in our ministry, even in our hobbies! Everything, absolutely everything gets better from the point of deliverance. Accepting the statistics of sexual bondage as accurate, somewhere between 70-80% of men are currently struggling with sexual addiction and bondage. That is a significant amount of time either being invested in dark, sinful choices or resisting temptation. Can you just imagine how the Kingdom of God would advance if we significantly lowered that statistic? No wonder the devil traps men and women in sexual bondage; the nature of the bondage is all-consuming, the ultimate time-waster!

And just think about our families. Oh that God would deliver men and women from their bondage so our families would grow strong! What a thing that would be!

This is why we need to pray for porn-free parents. Moms and dads who understand the battle and potential victory to help their children when they face that looming mountain. Moms and dads who can model a repentant life with integrity. Moms and dads who have fallen deeper in love with Jesus than ever before because in His rescuing of their souls, He cleared the way to a truer relationship with our Lord Jesus than anyone could dream possible.

What a thing that would be.

This isn’t to say that there won’t be battles left to fight, what a foolish notion! Of course there are and will be more battles because we know that temptation is common to all humanity (1 Co 10:13). But the nature of sexual bondage is profound and far more destructive than many of the other battles we face, therefore sexual victory is life-giving in the most profound way.

Parents, commit yourselves to this end! To purity at all costs. And just watch what God does with your family.
